Introduction

This textbook Reading Skills and Strategies was created especially for students and teachers in an introductory, college-level reading program.  I created this book for my Essential Reading Skills class at Kirkwood Community College. The main goals of the book are to teach students useful skills that can be used in any reading setting in their academic and professional careers.  Also, I hope students can increase their confidence in reading by practicing reading strategies through relevant and accessible articles provided in the original version of this textbook.

I realized that I needed to create my own book when the printed textbook I had been using became incredibly expensive for students. The printed book also had limitations given that many of my students take my class from countries outside of the United States, where obtaining a printed textbook can be even more costly and even impossible to obtain. I also understand what it is like to eat ramen noodles and crackers in order to have money to buy textbooks. I wanted to use free materials, reorganize and edit them in a useful way, and add in specific content that my students needed to be successful. I plan to continue to edit this book and add in additional content as needed for my students. Feel free to clone, edit and reorganize this text to suit your needs.
