Here is a list of the articles and research that we used to help inform our recommendations for this committee:

  • Flink, P., & Leonard, T. (2019). Students with disabilities: Experiences attending a two-year community college. Community College Journal of Research and Practice, 41(12), 891- 903. https://doi.org/10.1080/10668926.2018.1554514
    • Fink and Leonard’s (2019) study is a phenomenological study that looks at the lived experiences of 10 students with disabilities attending two-year community college and is grounded in the framework of student involvement theory. Many of the experiences recounted by these community college students with disabilities have underlying themes that certainly impact their mental health and wellbeing as well as academic success. The discussion section of the article does an excellent job of explaining how different interactions (in and outside the classroom) shaped these students’ experiences in either a negative or positive way.
  • Morris, P., Deickman, J., McIntyre, K., Roberts, V., & Bohlig, E. (2023) Engagement and withdrawal for community college student veterans, Community College Journal of Research and Practice. DOI: 10.1080/10668926.2023.2189180
    • https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10668926.2023.2189180 This study used responses from 17,354 student veterans on the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) to investigate the relationship between student engagement and likelihood of withdrawal. Childcare, academic readiness (or lack thereof), and employment status were all factors found that impacted student veteran’s reasons for withdrawal while studying at community colleges. I find this to be helpful in understanding how universities can support student veterans to better utilize campus resources and ultimately support their retention and success.
